PNG is an extensible file format for the lossless, portable, well-compressed storage of raster images. PNG provides a patent-free replacement for GIF and can also replace many common uses of TIFF.
PNG supports palette-based images (with palettes of 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA colors), grayscale images (with or without alpha channel), and full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images (with or without alpha channel). Sample depths range from 1 to 16 bits.
PNG files nearly always use file extension PNG or png and are assigned MIME media type image/png;
approved on 14 October 1996 by W3C.
